This specimen was lot 73603 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Franc, 1587-H. La Rochelle Mint. Henry III. NGC AU-55. A wholesome and sharply detailed Franc, struck a bit out of round but with a decent amount of the peripheries intact." Duplessy lists this type, which is a demi-franc, not a franc, for 1575-93 from numerous mints. The face value was ten sols tournois. Sombart reports thirteen known in his survey[2], making this a common date. The mintmark was normally directly beneath the bust but is in the outer legend on this example.

Recorded mintage: 134,136, including a few quarts de franc.

Specification: 7.09 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dupl-1131, Sb 4716.
