France 1587-B ecu d'or

This specimen was lot 20181 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, 1587-B. Henry III (1574-89). NGC MS-63. Good strike on a nice round flan with full legends on both sides including a bold 4 digit date. Soft satin luster and quite good eye appeal." This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy[2] with a face value of sixty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. On this one, the obverse legend starts at the bottom by the mintmark.
