Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74647

This specimen was lot 74647 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/4 Ecu, 1586-(9). Rennes Mint. Henry III. PCGS EF-40. From the Richard August Collection." Sombart reports 24 examples in his survey[2], making this a common date of a common mint. Some mints put the king's titles on the shield side but most, including Rennes, put the king's titles on the cross side.

Recorded mintage: 415,203 including some eighth écus[2].

Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver.
