Flanders (1467-74) 2 groat
This specimen was lot 1043 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €95 (about US$122 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Karel de Stoute (1467-1477), AR dubbele groot vierlander, z.j. (1467-1474), Brugge. Vz/ Bourgondisch wapen in het veld. Kz/ Lang gevoet kruis met in het hart een lelie en in de hoeken twee lelies en twee leeuwen. Barstje. bijna Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Charles the Rash, 1467-77, undated silver double groat, circa 1467-74, Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian arms; reverse: long cross with a lily in the center, cantonned with two lilies and two lions. Cracked, about Extremely Fine.)"
The death of Charles the Rash in battle in 1477 ended the Burgundian dynasty. His daughter Maria's marriage to Maximilian of Austria began Hapsburg rule in the Low Countries. This dubbele groot vierlander was issued in the first part of his reign. It was also struck in Brabant, where it was called a double patard.
