Flanders (1466-67) 2 stuiver
The first specimen was lot 636 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €600 (about US$881 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips de Goede (1419-1467), AR dubbele stuiver, z.j. (1466-1467), Gent. Vz/ Bourgondisch wapenschild in een driepas. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis met in het hart een lelie. Met BENDICTVM in het omschrift. Zeldzaam. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Philip the Good, 1419-67, undated double stuiver of 1466-67, Ghent mint. Obverse: Burgundian arms in trilobe; reverse: floriate cross with lily in the center. Scarce, Very fine to extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 1386 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips de Goede (1419-1467), AR dubbele stuiver, z.j. (1466-1467), Gent. Vz/ Bourgondisch wapenschild. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis met in het hart een lelie. Zeldzaam. Oneven rand. Mooie patina. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, very fine.)"
The death of the duke's son, Charles the Rash, in 1477, allowed the county to pass to the Spanish Hapsburgs. The second example lacks the trilobe around the shield.
