Jean Elsen sale 136, lot 628

This specimen was lot 628 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €8,500 (about US$12,477 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips de Goede (1419-1467), AV halve gouden rijder, 1434-1440, Gent. Vz/ De hertog te paard n. r., met een opgeheven zwaard in de rechterhand. Daaronder, FLAD. Kz/ Bourgondisch wapenschild op een gebloemd kruis. (dit exemplaar). Zeer zeldzaam Buitengewoon goed geslagen exemplaar. Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Philip the Good, 1419-67, gold half cavalier d'or of 1434-40, Ghent mint. Obverse: the duke with sword, FLAD below; reverse: Burgundian arms over a floriate cross. Very scarce, good strike, extremely fine.)"

This demi-cavalier d'or and the accompanying cavalier d'or (Fr-183) were issued by the duke of Burgundy for Flanders, the wealthiest part of his domain. A similar demi-cavalier d'or was issued at Brussels for Brabant (Fr-28). The death of the duke's son, Charles the Rash, in 1477, allowed the county to pass to the Spanish Hapsburgs.
