Jean Elsen sale 136, lot 629

This specimen was lot 629 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €85 (about US$125 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips de Goede (1419-1467), AR dubbele groot vierlander, 1433-1447, 1454-1456, 1466-1467, Gent en Brugge. Vz/ Bourgondisch wapen in het veld. Kz/ Lang gevoet kruis met in de hoeken twee lelies en twee leeuwen en in het hart een lelie. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Philip the Good, 1419-67, silver double groat, Ghent or Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian arms; reverse: long cross divides two lilies and two lions with another lily in the center. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

The death of the duke's son, Charles the Rash, in 1477, allowed the county to pass to the Spanish Hapsburgs.
