Jean Elsen sale 125, lot 1316

The first specimen was lot 3590 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 1400 CHF (about US$1,770 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN Flandern, Grafschaft Karl der Kühne, 1467-1477. Goldgulden o. J., Brügge. Selten. Sehr schön. (Belgium, county of Flanders, Charles the Rash, 1467-77, gold gulden without date, Bruges mint, rare, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 1316 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it sold for €750 (about US$998 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Karel de Stoute (1467-1477), AV Bourgondische goudgulden, z.j. (1467-1475), Brugge. 1e emissie. Vz/ Sint Andries met zijn kruis voor zich, hoofd n. r. Kz/ Bourgondisch wapenschild op een lang gevoet kruis. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Charles the Rash (1467-77), Burgundian goldgulden without date, Bruges mint, first issue. Obverse: St. Andrew holds his cross; reverse: Burgundian arms over a long cross, very fine.)"

This coin is variously catalogued as a goldgulden or a florin and was a debased version of a ducat. The coin, strictly speaking, does not belong with the Spanish Netherlands as it was issued by the Burgundian duke Charles the Rash. His death in battle ended the dynasty and allowed the Low Countries to fall into the hands of the Spanish.

Specification: 3.40 g, 0.792 fine gold, the first specimen is 3.42 g, the second specimen is 3,36 g.
