Jean Elsen sale 125, lot 1318

This specimen was lot 1318 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,055 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Maria van Bourgondië (1477-1482), AV Bourgondische goudgulden, z.j. (1478-1480), Brugge. 2e uitgifte. Vz/ Sint Andries met zijn kruis voor zich, hoofd n.l. Kz/ Bourgondisch wapenschild op een lang gevoet kruis. bijna Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Maria of Burgundy (1477-82), Burgundian goldgulden without date, Bruges mint, second issue. Obverse: St. Andrew holds his cross; reverse: Burgundian arms over a long cross, almost extremely fine.)"

This coin is variously catalogued as a goldgulden or a florin and was equal to a ducat. The coin, strictly speaking, does not belong with the Spanish Netherlands as it was issued by the Burgundian duchess Maria. Her marriage to Maximilian of Hapsburg ended Burgundian independence and allowed the Low Countries to fall into the hands of the Spanish.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen is 3,42 g.
