Ghent (1488) florin Fr-239
This specimen was lot 1319 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,523 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Gent in opstand tegen Maximiliaan (1488-1492), AV St. Jansgoudgulden, z.j. (1488). Vz/ Johannes de Doper met het lam Gods rechtopstaand, achter het leeuwenschild dat de legende onderbreekt. Kz/ Bourgondisch wapenschild op een lang gebloemd kruis met in de hoeken G-A-N-D. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Ghent in rebellion against Maximilian (1488-92), St. John goldgulden without date. Obverse: St. John the Baptist holds the Lamb of God in his arms, the city arms at his feet; reverse: Burgundian arms over a floriate cross, "G-A-N-D" in the fields, very fine.)"
This rare type, issued during one of Ghent's many revolts against outside authority, comes with (Fr-238) and without date.
