Brabant (1474-77)(h) florin d'or Fr-33
The first specimen was lot 3005 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,680 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT Karl der Kühne, 1467-1477. Florin d'or de Bourgogne o. J. Antwerpen. GOLD. R Sehr schön + . (duchy of Brabant, Charles the Rash, 1467-77, undated florin d'or, Antwerp mint. Scarce, very fine or better.)"
The second specimen was lot 745 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,620 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Charles le Téméraire (1467-1477), AV florin de Bourgogne, s.d. (1474-1477), Anvers. 2e émission. D/ Saint André deb. de f., t. à g., ten. sa croix devant lui. R/ Écu de Bourgogne sur une longue croix pattée. Rare. presque Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Charles the Rash, 1467-77, undated gold florin of Burgundy, circa 1474-77, Antwerp mint, second emission. Obverse: St. Andrew standing, facing, holding a cross before him; reverse: arms of Burgundy over a long cross pattée. about Extremely Fine.)"
This coin is variously catalogued as a goldgulden or a florin and was equal to a ducat. The coin, strictly speaking, does not belong with the Spanish Netherlands as it was issued by the Burgundian duke Charles the Rash. His death in battle ended the dynasty and allowed the Low Countries to fall into the hands of the Spanish. This type, which is also known from Louvain, is among the more common of the pre-Spanish gold issues from this locale. The Louvain product lacks the hand mintmark shown here.
