This specimen was lot 3048 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $6,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ecuador. 8 Escudos, 1838-ST. Liberty head left. Reverse: Sun and Zodiac over three mountain peaks. Last digit of date weak. Rare type. NGC graded Extremely Fine, Details (Surface Hairlines)." This type was struck 1838-41 but like all predecimal Ecuadorian gold coins, remains beyond the reach of ordinary collectors.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW.
