This specimen was lot 2353 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "ECUADOR. 4 Escudos, 1838-MV. Quito Mint. NGC AU Details--Excessive Surface Hairlines. Slightly weak in center of obverse as is typically found with this issue. Only mild circulation wear to low relief design and free of detracting or eye catching marks. Pleasing golden orange toning in peripheries and in much of reverse with strong remaining luster in legends and protected areas. From the Michael Druck Collection." This type was struck 1836-41 and, like all Ecuadorian predecimal gold coins, is rare and expensive. Three assayers are noted for 1838: MV, ST and FP.
