This specimen was lot 1728 in the Eliasberg sale, which sold for $27,600. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1839 MV 8 escudos. Quito mint. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Rich yellow gold with deeper orange gold overtones. Highly lustrous, with reflectivity in the peripheral recesses. Faint hairlines, tiny planchet lamination left of sun face, excellent aesthetic appeal and much finer than typically seen. A remarkable coin. This date is called 'rara' (rare) in Calico. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

This type was struck 1838-41 but like all predecimal Ecuadorian gold coins, remains beyond the reach of ordinary collectors.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 26.95 grams, 35.30 mm diameter.
