This specimen was lot 3722 in Goldberg sale 59 (Beverly Hills, May 2008), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Denmark. 2 Rigisdaler, 1855-VS. Frederick VII, 1848-1863. Bust right. Reverse: Value within wreath. Lightly toned. NGC graded MS-62." Double rigsdalers are recorded from the Copenhagen mint (shown here) and the Altona mint for 1854-72 as part of the coinage reform of 1854. The coinage was reformed again in 1874 to a fully decimal system and this denomination was dropped. Denmark has not struck crown-sized silver coins for circulation since the reform.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not especially rare.

Specification: 28.89 g, 0.875 fine silver, .812 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Dav-77; KM 761.2.
