Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1116
SB924-1116r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 23095 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 2 Kroner, 1693. Copenhagen Mint; mm: heart. Christian V. NGC VF-25. An always interesting and desirable type given the width and heft in relation to the diameter, this piece yields much charm. Despite some even circulation, this wonderful example is sure to fill a hole in the next collection it enters." The second specimen was lot 1116 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €5,040 (about US$5,585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Thick and Hefty 2 Krone in Laudable Mint State Condition, DENMARK. 2 Krone, 1693. Copenhagen Mint; mm: Heart. Christian V. NGC MS-61. Mintmaster: Christian Wineke. Engraver: Anton Meybusch. A type that is somewhat frequently encountered with heavy circulation, the present specimen is a notable exception, being tied with one other example for the finest certified representative of the type. The coin is supremely attractive, with handsome details and charming multi-hue toning encompassing large swathes of the surfaces. A 2 Krone that does not lack for beauty."

Both this issue and the related KM 429/Dav-A3647 of 1693-95 are very rare. The "·P·&·I·" on the reverse is not a mintmark but the king's motto, "PIETATE ET IVSTITIA".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 35.97 g, 0.833 fine silver. This specimen is 34.99 g, the second specimen is 35.43 g.
