Denmark 1645 1/2 ducat Fr-40
This specimen was lot 23089 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 1/2 Ducat, 1645. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU-55. "Hebrew" type. So-called on account of the tetragrammaton on the reverse ("Jehovah" or God or four letters in Hebrew), this lightly handled specimen features the king standing on the obverse. Highly brilliant and sporting a golden-yellow hue, and standing as a fairly RARE fractional example of the type. From the Augustana Collection." This type was struck 1644-46 along with a single ducat (Fr-39) and a double ducat (Fr-38) in protest of a Swedish invasion. In the 1645 Treaty of Brömsebro (today part of Karlskrona), Denmark had to cede the provinces of Jämtland and Härjedalen as well as the islands of Gotland and Ösel to Sweden.
