Denmark-Gluckstadt 1645 1/16 speciedaler
This specimen was lot 74270 in Stack's Bowers May 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $129. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 1/16 Speciedaler (3 Skilling Lybsk), 1645. Gluckstadt Mint. Christian IV. NGC VF-25." Gluckstadt, a town on the Elbe downstream of the city of Hamburg, was founded in 1617 by the kings of Denmark and later made the capital of the duchy of Holstein, which they ruled. This type was struck 1640-47 with two different obverse legends which the SCWC lumps into one catalog number. Obverse legend 1 is "CHRISTIANVS·IIII·D:G" and legend 2 is "CHRISTIAN:4:D:G:D:N:REX" (shown here); both are recorded for 1645.
