The first specimen was lot 10043 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €780 (about US$813). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 4 Skilling, 1535. Aarhus Mint. Christian III. NGC AU-53. Rare variation with date under portrait. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." The second specimen was lot 10044 in the same sale, where it sold for €360 (about US$375). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 4 Skilling, 1535. Copenhagen Mint. Christian III. NGC AU-55. Excellent condition and toning on this coin, which bears Copenhagen's Latin name 'Hafniensis'. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." The third specimen was lot 10045 in the same sale, where it sold for €240 (about US$250). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 4 Skilling, 1535. Ribe Mint. Christian III. NGC AU Details--Environmental Damage. Well-struck for type . From the L. E. Bruun Collection." The fourth specimen was lot 10048 in the same sale, where it sold for €216 (about US$225). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 4 Skilling, 1535. Roskilde Mint. Christian III. NGC AU-58. A very large emission; Schou lists 91 variations! Struck to pay off the German mercenaries camping i[n] Roskilde during the siege of Copenhagen. Light corrosion at obverse rim. While it is listed in the Bruun 1928 catalogue as Schou-196, it is in fact -197. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." The fifth specimen was lot 10128 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €244 (about US$281). The catalog description[2] noted, "DENMARK. 4 Skilling, 1535. Aarhus Mint. Christian III. NGC VF Details--Cleaned. Spelling Error. Attractive example with a sharp portrait of the king and a lovely, deep toning reflecting a reddish/bordeaux hue. Some softness from the strike on the reverse towards the center. The legends are fully legible. Variation with the first "I" missing in the king's name and with an additional "I" after the "A"; reading "CRSTIAINI". Out of the 170 registered variations in Schou, only two show this spelling error. From the L.E. Bruun Collection."At this time one gulden was 48 skilling; the specie daler would not appear until later.
