Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41034

This specimen was lot 41034 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "CZECHOSLOVAKIA. 100 Korun, 1981. PCGS PROOF-68 Cameo. Struck to commemorate the centennial of the birth of Professor Otakar Spaniel. From the Whytecliffe Collection." Wikipedia comments, "Otakar Španiel (13 June 1881 – 15 February 1955) was a Czech sculptor and engraver." He designed most of the coins struck during the first republic (1919-39). This specimen realized twelve times the catalog value in proof. The SCWC notes, "56,189 pieces, Unc and Proof, were melted by the Czech National Bank in 1999."

Recorded mintage: 115,000 plus 5,000 proofs.

Specification: 9 g, 0.500 fine silver, .144 troy oz ASW, 29 mm diameter.
