Cuba 1999 100 pesos Fr-95
This specimen was lot 33434 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $3,900. The lot description[1] noted, "Cuba. Republic gold Proof "Hummingbird" 100 Pesos (1 oz) 1999 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC, Havana mint. One of only a handful of occupants at NGC." Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. The hummingbird shown here, most likely the bee hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae), is at least native to Cuba. Wikipedia comments, "The bee hummingbird is the smallest living bird. Females weigh 2.6 g and are 6.1 cm long, and are slightly larger than males, which have an average weight of 1.95 g and length of 5.5 cm. Like all hummingbirds, it is a swift, strong flier."
Recorded mintage: 1,000.
Specification: 31.10 g, 0.999 fine gold, 38 mm diameter, 1.000 troy oz AGW.
