Colombia 1869-P 5 decimos
This specimen was lot 16711 in the Whittier sale (Heritage auction 410, Long Beach, June 2006) where it sold for $10,350. This specimen realized the highest price of any Colombian half dollar in the sale. The catalog description noted[1], "Republic 5 Decimos 1869 Popayán, Fine 12 NGC, lightly toned and quite well-struck for this early Popayán coinage. Extremely rare date with about five known examples, this being the second finest. BC-6 (Davis Burnett, Half Dollars of Colombia.)" While Colombian half dollars are common as a class, even in uncirculated, this is a very rare date, labeled "1 known" in the SCWC. Popayán struck five decimos 1869-74 and 1878; none are common.
