This specimen was lot 16721 in the Whittier sale (Heritage auction 410, Long Beach, June 2006) where it sold for $5,175. This specimen is mentioned in the SCWC. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 5 Decimos 1869 Medellin, AU55 NGC, boldly struck design details and considerable original mint luster make this example the finest known for the date. A truly remarkable coin for this mint and era. BC14." While Colombian half dollars are common as a class, even in uncirculated, this is a very rare date. Medellin struck 5 decimos 1868-85 but the common dates of the 1880's use a substantially different bust of Liberty (KM 161.1).

Specification: 12.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, .335 troy oz ASW, edge lettered DIOS LEY LIBERTAD.
