Colombia 1829-B RS 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 29558 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1829 BOGOTA-RS AU55 NGC, Bogotá mint. A well-preserved and sharply struck coin with substantial luster remaining in the fields, slight wear on the higher points and the expected mild surface abrasions for the assigned grade. Very scarce in this quality." This type was struck at Popayán 1822-36 and at Bogotá 1822-38. It was superseded by the quasi-decimal sixteen pesos issued at both mints 1837-49. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz.
