Colombia H3042-29557r.jpg

This specimen was lot 29557 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1828 POPAYAN-FM AU58 PCGS, Popayán mint, Borderline Uncirculated with little actual high-point wear, strong mint luster and the often encountered soft strike in the centers. A well above average representative of the issue, very scarce in this engaging quality." This type was struck at Popayán 1822-36 and at Bogotá 1822-38. It was superseded by the quasi-decimal sixteen pesos issued at both mints 1837-49. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets.

Catalog reference: KM 82.2, Fr-68.
