Colombia 1738-SF M 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 33402 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $3,120. The lot description[1] noted, "Colombia. Philip V gold Cob 2 Escudos 1738/7-M AU55 NGC, Nuevo Reino mint. 'F' to the left of shield, 'M' to the right. 1738 is already a rare issue, with the noted overdate unlisted in the major catalogs. On top of that, the lack of environmental or marine damage makes this an absolute unicorn of a coin." This type was issued from Bogotá 1717-46. The production of cobs continued sporadically into the 1740's. It was superseded by milled portrait coinage. As with most cobs, specimens with legible dates form a minority of survivors. Many have been made into jewelry and sold as "pirate gold". The mintmark, shown here as an "F", should be "SF" for Santa Fé.
