This specimen was lot 44072 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Cob 2 Escudos, 1740/39-SF M. Bogota Mint. Philip V. PCGS AU-55. Though a bit of a die shift is noted upon the reverse, this lightly circulated cob nevertheless yields a solid beginning and terminal digit in the date, with the final one revealing the noted overdate variant of 9 over 0.From the S.P. Rutherford Collection. Ex: Sedwick 10 (10/2011) Lot # 79." This type was issued from Bogotá 1717-46. Specimens with legible dates are worth double those without. The early dates come without a mintmark or assayer initials. Many have been made into jewelry and sold as "pirate gold."
