Sedwick sale 25, lot 44

This specimen was lot 44 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2018), where it sold for $1,904. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bogota, Colombia, cob 2 escudos, 1741(M), NGC AU 55, finest and only example in NGC census. Bold full shield (well centered) with much crown above, off-center cross with prominent tressure and clear date at top, contrasting sediment on fields. NGC #4722647-010." This type was issued from Bogotá 1717-46. The production of cobs continued sporadically into the 1740's. It was superseded by milled portrait coinage. As with most cobs, specimens with legible dates form a minority of survivors. This example should show an "SF" mintmark and an "M" assayer initial but those features did not strike up.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, .199 troy oz ASW, this specimen 6.76 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9760, Fr-8, Restrepo-M80.12; S-B26; KM-17.2; CT-397.
