Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 233

This specimen was lot 233 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,800 € (about US$2,531 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1737. Felipe V. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. M. 2 escudos. Lions and castles. Scratch on obverse. Attractive. Rare. MBC+/EBC- [about extremely fine]." This type was struck at Bogotá in Colombia 1717-46 but few examples show dates. Numista lists 1719-23, 1726-28, 1732-36, 1740-45 and others exist, including the 1737 shown here. The mintmark, shown here as an "F", should be "SF" for Santa Fé.
