Aureo sale 232, lot 164

The specimen shown was lot 164 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 1,250 euros (about US$2,062 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Felipe V (1700-1746). 1735. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. M. 2 escudos. Leones y castillos. Visible el nombre y ordinal del rey. Fecha perfecta. Muy rara así. MBC+. (Philip V, 1700-46, two escudos of 1735, Bogotá mint, lions and castles. King's name and ordinal visible and perfect date, very rare thus, choice extremely fine.)

This type was issued from Bogotá 1717-46. Specimens with legible dates are worth double those without. Many have been made into jewelry and sold as "pirate gold."
