Sedwick sale 27. lot 31

This specimen was lot 31 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $2,618. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bogota, Colombia, cob 2 escudos, 1736(M). Thick flan with choice full shield and cross, bold full date, nice rich color, mintmark F(S) visible to left of shield." This type was issued from Bogotá 1717-46. The production of cobs continued sporadically into the 1740's. It was superseded by milled portrait coinage. As with most cobs, specimens with legible dates form a minority of survivors. Many have been made into jewelry and sold as "pirate gold".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.68 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9743, S-B26; Restrepo-M80.12; KM-17.2; Cal-1955.
