Colombia 1734-M 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 58 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $8,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1734, assayer M (facing inward) to right, NGC AU 55, Restrepo Plate (stated on label). Very choice full date outside of complete cross-and-tressure with distinctive half ringlets in tressure-dimples, also full but slightly doubled shield (couple flat spots) with bold assayer M (facing inward) inside part of king's name to right, contrastingly toned on fields, second finest in NGC census behind a single MS 62. Plate Coin M80-12 on page 98 of Restrepo's Coins of Colombia (2012)." This type was struck for Philip IV 1701, 1707-43, 1747-48 (some of the early dates were struck in the name of Charles II, as if mint officials were trying to avoid taking sides in the War of the Spanish Succession). Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are not listed altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period. Assayer "M" stamped coins 1730-48. Mexico and Madrid struck portrait two escudos in 1734.
