Sedwick Treasure Auction 39, lot 35
Sedwick 39-0035r.jpg

This specimen was lot 35 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $8,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1633, assayer A below mintmark NR to left, very rare, NGC MS 63 / Mesuno Hoard, finest known in NGC census, ex-Santa Fe, Restrepo Plate. Exceptionally broad flan with full inner details (the cross double-struck but same size and style as the 1628 mule issues in the previous two lots, and in fact with the same obverse die) and nearly full legend including complete date, full NRA and denomination II, traces of contrasting red encrustation, desirably pedigreed, one of only two examples known to us. From the 'Mesuno hoard' (ca. 1636) and pedigreed to the Santa Fe Collection (Sedwick Auction 11, lot 22), also plated on page 85 of Restrepo's Coins of Colombia (stated on label)." This type was struck 1628-55 for Philip IV. Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are not listed altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.71 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-6657, ANUN-2; Restrepo-M50.11 (this coin); S-B20; KM-4.1; Fr-2.
