Colombia 1628-NR A 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 33487 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Colombia: Philip IV gold Cob 2 Escudos 1628 NR-A MS61 NGC, Nuevo Reino mint. Much of the detail, including the date, is still visible on this single-graded Mint State example at NGC. The obverse shield is entirely intact and set in high relief against the semi-lustrous fields while the small cross on the reverse is surrounded by an almost entirely legible legend. A conditional rarity to say the least." The production of cobs continued in Colombia sporadically into the 1740's. It was superseded by milled pillar coinage. As with most cobs, specimens with legible dates form a minority of survivors.
