Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71275
China SB1019-71275r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71275 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 10 Yuan, 2000. Panda Series. NGC MS-69. Frosted ring variety. Featuring an outer ring on the reverse which has been frosted rather than the typical brilliance, this piece presents a great deal of snowy allure given all of the frosting to the devices." The silver panda was introduced in 1983 and after several years of low sales, started to become popular in the early nineties, especially after the weight was increased to one troy ounce. It is now a strong competitor to the Mexican libertad, the U.S. silver eagle and the Canadian maple leaf, and hundreds of varieties exist. This design was also issued with matte devices.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 31.10 g, 0.999 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-1310; PAN-333a.
