China 1987 100 yuan KM-177

Sincona sale 51, lot 3122

This specimen was lot 3122 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$784 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"100 Yuan 1986. Auf den 125. Geburtstag von Zhan Tianyou. 12 Unzen Silber. Selten. Nur 3000 Exemplare geprägt. Polierte Platte. FDC. In Originalschachtel. (people's republic of China, one hundred yuan of 1986, on the 125th birthday of Zhan Tianyou, twelve ounce silver. Rare. Only 3000 pieces struck, Choice Proof, In original box.)"

This issue, like many of the NCLT's issued by China in the 1980's, is rare. We can't explain the difference between the specification weight and the reported weight. Zhan Tianyou (1861-1919) was one of the first Chinese nationals to obtain a college degree at a Western university (in his case, Yale) and oversaw construction of the first railway built in China without foreign assistance.
