Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74634
SB1024-74634r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74634 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Gold 5 Yuan, 1987-Y. Shenyang Mint. Panda Series. PCGS MS-69. A beaming example of this diminutive issue in almost perfect grade." The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. A complete set is thousands of types yet buyers clamor for more. The first gold panda was issued in 1983 and quickly became an annual release. At the beginning, there was little market in China for these and they were not popular in the United States, so the mintages were low. This date comes with three mintmarks; S for Shanghai, P for proof (struck at Shenyang) and Y for Shenyang.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.55 g, 0.999 fine gold, 14 mm diameter, 0.050 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 159 (formerly KM Y124), Fr-B6; PAN-48B.
