This specimen was lot 145 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 1,150 CHF (about US$1,369 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"100 Yuan 1987 S. Panda. FDC. In Originalverschweissung. Kleiner Kupferfleck. (China, gold one hundred yuan of 1987, panda. Uncirculated, In original capsule, Small copper spot.)"
The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. A complete set is thousands of types yet buyers clamor for more. The pandas stamped with a "P" are proofs.
