SB421-52242r.jpg

This specimen was lot 52242 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 20 Cents, ND (1912). PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. An attractive little silver minor coin exhibiting a bold strike with lovely rich mottled gray patina and an iridescent sheen that pops out when tilting in the light adding good eye appeal with much originality sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters." The overthrow of the Manchus and the founding of the republic led to a burst of optimism and a number of commemoratives, including this one honoring Sun Yat-sen. The idealism quickly dissipated as various warlords jockeyed for power. Yuan Shih-kai managed to get himself crowned emperor before he died in 1916.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.3 g, 0.900 fine silver.
