China (1912) dollar Y-318
This specimen was lot 52214 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $20,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Dollar, ND (1912). PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. High five-pointed stars variety. Extremely pleasing quality for this VERY SCARCE and perhaps underrated issue. Satiny luster and cartwheel radiance highlight each side, but a few light marks prevent an even higher designation." The overthrow of the Manchus and the founding of the republic led to a burst of optimism and a number of commemoratives, including this one honoring Sun Yat-sen. The idealism quickly dissipated as various warlords jockeyed for power. Yuan Shih-kai managed to get himself crowned emperor before he died in 1916.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.3 g, 0.900 fine silver.
