Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 52240
SB421-52240r.jpg

This specimen was lot 52240 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $57,600. The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHINA. Gold 20 Cents Pattern, ND (1912). Nanking Mint. NGC MS-63. Sun Yat-sen Memento type. A sharply struck and attractive RARE pattern with flashy fields and die polish lines on both sides. Our first offering of this type since August 2019 (SBP HK, lot 52175) and our first Choice example since December 2015 (SBP HK, lot 60041)."

The overthrow of the Manchus and the founding of the republic led to a burst of optimism and a number of commemoratives, including this one honoring Sun Yat-sen. This gold pattern was not intended for the masses. The idealism quickly dissipated as various warlords jockeyed for power. Yuan Shih-kai managed to get himself crowned emperor before he died in 1916.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: regular issue: 5.3 g, 0.900 fine silver.
