The first specimen was lot 23900 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $37,375. The catalog description[1] noted, "Empire. Dollar Year 3 (1911), MS65+ PCGS, variety without the dot after DOLLAR. A superb example with satiny gray and gold patina and virtually perfect surfaces. Extremely rare in this superior quality and a coin with exceptional eye appeal. The nicest example of this type we have seen. Ex: Irving Goodman Collection." The second specimen was lot 52166 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHINA. Dollar, Year 3 (1911). Tientsin Mint. ANACS MS-63. Variety with no dot after "DOLLAR" and an extra flame. Highly attractive, this survivor offers a bold strike with satiny surfaces and frosty devices. Lovely rich mottled patina near the edges adds charm to this very collectable and desirable piece." This type was struck over a period of years at several mints and it is listed as common but choice examples are, as always, scarce. The Chinese Empire collapsed the following year, in 1912.

Recorded mintage: 77,153,000.

Specification: 26.9 g, 0.900 fine silver, .778 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: L&M-37; K-227; KM-Y31; WS-0046b.
