China (1912) dollar Y-320
This specimen was lot 1195 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $51,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA, Republic, Wuchang mint, dollar, Li Yuan-hung, (1912), tripled reverse variety, 黎元洪像开国纪念壹圆戴帽。, PCGS MS63. The first of several Republic of China rarities in this auction, this Li Yuan Hung dollar stands out for its numerical grade in addition to the tripling seen on the reverse details, a scarce variety for this scarce type. Bright, silver surfaces with little in the way of toning beyond a few streaks show off many die-polish lines while the design details are struck up well." The overthrow of the Manchus and the founding of the republic led to a burst of optimism and a number of commemoratives, including this one honoring Li Yuan Hung, who was briefly president. The idealism quickly dissipated as various warlords jockeyed for power. Yuan Shih-kai managed to get himself crowned emperor before he died in 1916.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification:26.50 g, 0.900 fine silver.
