China (1912) dollar Y-321
This specimen was lot 52203 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $46,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Dollar, ND (1912). PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. Li Yuan Hung without hat type. Blazing and fully dazzling, this resounding Gem shimmers with exceptional brilliance and seemingly endless luster. A hint of golden toning is noted as one approaches the peripheries and accentuating the devices. An example that is clearly destined for a true connoisseur seeking the heights of eye appeal." The overthrow of the Manchus and the founding of the republic led to a burst of optimism and a number of commemoratives, including this one honoring Li Yuan Hung, who was briefly president. The idealism quickly dissipated as various warlords jockeyed for power. Yuan Shih-kai managed to get himself crowned emperor before he died in 1916.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
