Chile 1868-So 50 centavos
This specimen was lot 71443 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 50 Centavos, 1868-So. Santiago Mint. PCGS AU-58. A well-preserved and wholesome example, displaying abundant detailing even in the more delicate parts of the devices, such as the condor's breast and head. Much luster remains on the fields, which projects the elegant midnight blue and mottled gray tones of the surfaces. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This fifty centavo piece was minted in Santiago in 1867-72, superseding a type with higher relief (KM 134). This condor also appeared on half décimos, décimos and twenty centavos coins of the late 1860's. An 1867/6 overdate is mentioned in the SCWC but is awarded no premium.
