Chile 1868 decimo
This specimen was lot 30443 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Proof Decimo 1868-So, PF63 NGC. The gunmetal tone in the fields of this example provide sharp contrast with the devices. This issue is scarce in proof." This silver décimo or ten centavos piece was minted in Santiago, Chile, in 1867-1880, in 0.835 fine silver. The series immediately prior (1864-1866) was at 0.900 fine silver, while the following series (1879-1894) was struck on planchets of even lower fineness (0.500 fine silver). All three series show the same obverse and reverse design.
