Chile 1851 centavo rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1367 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $484. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Republic. 1818-present. CU Centavo. Mint in the United States or England. Dated 1851. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64 RB. Very light brown with almost full red underlying luster. Only one graded higher. Ex Whittier Collection (Heritage 410, 2 June 2006), lot 16476." Chile converted to decimal coinage in the 1850's and these half and one centavos were part of the program. This one centavo comes in flat star (KM 119.1 thru KM 119.4) and raised star (shown here). Both are common in circulated condition.

Recorded mintage: 3,300,000 plus 2,430,000 of the flat star (KM 119).

Specification: copper, this specimen Ø29 mm, 10.29 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 120.
