Chile 1851 1/2 centavo KM-118
This specimen was lot 1364 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $605. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Republic. 1818-present. CU 1/2 Centavo. Mint in the United States or England. Dated 1851. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65 RB. Very light brown patina with significant red surfaces. Gem uncirculated. Highest ever graded. Type with raised star. Purchased from Paramount International Coin Company, August 1975." Chile converted to decimal coinage in the 1850's and these half and one centavos were part of the program. This half centavo comes in flat star (KM 117.1 thru KM 117.5) and raised star (shown here). Both are common in circulated condition.
Recorded mintage: 2,200,000 plus 1,620,000 of the flat star (KM 117).
