This specimen was lot 1011 in Goldberg sale 46 (Beverly Hills, May 2008), where it sold for $2,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chile. 8 Escudos, 1851-So LA (Santiago). Liberty as Pallas Athene standing at altar. Reverse: Arms. NGC graded MS-61." This is the final date of a series struck 1846-51. There is an earlier standing liberty type, struck 1839-45, where liberty is resting her hand on a pedestal instead of the book of the law shown here. Neither type is rare but prices of these coins have surged in recent years.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27 g, 0.875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW, edge lettered with month of issue.
Catalog reference: Fr-41; KM-105.
