Castile (1369-79)-S real
This specimen was lot 1491 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €200 (about US$260 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ESPAGNE, CASTILLE ET LEON, Henri II de Trastamare (1368-1379), AR real, Séville. D/ Grand monogramme EN couronné. Double légende sur le tour. R/ Quadrilobe aux armes écartelées de Castille et Leon, entre trois rosettes. En dessous, S. Très Beau. (Spain, kingdom of Castile and Leon, Henry of Trastamara, 1368-79, silver real, Seville mint. Obverse: large crowned monogram "EN", surrounded by a double row legend; reverse: quadrilobe with the arms of Castile and Leon between three rosettes and the mintmark "S". Very Fine.)"
Cayón states that this coin had a face value of three maravedis at the time of issue. It was struck at Burgos, Cordoba, Coruña, Cuenca, Seville (shown here) and Toledo. It was the largest silver coin of the reign.
